DEVOTIONAL METHOD

For the Devotional Method of Bible study a passage of the Bible, large or small, is read and meditated on. You meditate on the Word until the Holy Spirit guides you to personally apply the passage into your life. It is the simplest and least time consuming of all the Bible study methods making it the most preferred among moms of young children. The goal is to take the Bible seriously and to do what it says to do. You can use the Devotional Method with only your Bible in hand, or you can use any number of Devotional Books as a guide to which scriptures to study, or for added insight.

  • Pray for understanding and guidance as you apply the passage into your life.
  • Meditate on the verse(s) you have chosen for your study, or the book has laid out for you.
  • Write out the application you will make from the passage into your life.
  • Try to memorize a verse from the passage that summarizes what you have learned.

Below are some typical questions you might answer and perhaps journal while using the Devotional Method of Bible study:

1. What passage are you reading?

2. What is this passage about?

3. Make this passage personal. (use the words I, me, my and mine.)

  • I can relate to this passage because…
  • This passage reminds me of my life because…
  • I can claim this passage as mine because…

4.  Make this passage practical. (What can you do with this passage?)

5.  Make this passage possible. (How can you apply this passage to your life?)

6. Make it measurable. (Share what you have decided to do with someone who will hold you              accountable.)
